Media Center Extensibility Host Crash then MediaBrowserWS dies...

So the issues I've been having with MediaBrowserWS crashing the Extensibility host and then dying itself persists into the latest version (0.8 Beta 6). Still looking for suggestions. If you install MediaBrowserWS, reboot, then run media center and go into media browser - the extensiblity host will fail and then media center will report mediabrowserws has died. Happens with firewall off, UAC off, and run as administrator. Running on Windows 7 x64.

I've copied the thread from the MediaBrowser Community Tracker below.

I'm also having a problem with 0.8 Beta 3 where the Media Center Extensibility Host crashes and then I get a crash message from MediaCenterWS. The log shows that it’s started fine though with no error messages. I'm running Windows 7 X64 – Any suggestions?
Is it straight away that it crashes? Or is it when you're calling the service? – evorgevol 1 day ago
It crashes on launch of the media center application – even when run as administrator. – Tex8503 1 day ago delete
I've just put up a new installer, I've put a try/catch around pretty much anything and everything. Failing that I have no idea how to detect what is actually breaking it! I'll have to put my thinking cap on… – evorgevol 1 day ago
Nada… Installed the new version – same results – no error msg in the log either. I even disabled UAC. I will say that I'm getting into media browser and it lasts maybe a minute before the Extensibility Host dies and takes MediaBrowserWS with it. Any other ideas ? – Tex8503 1 day ago delete
Here’s the error details on the extensibility host crash : Description: Stopped working Problem signature: Problem Event Name: CLR20r3 Problem Signature 01: ehexthost.exe Problem Signature 02: 6.1.7600.16385 Problem Signature 03: 4a5bb6d3 Problem Signature 04: mscorlib Problem Signature 05: Problem Signature 06: 4bebe8e2 Problem Signature 07: 1a88 Problem Signature 08: 5c Problem Signature 09: System.InvalidOperationException OS Version: 6.1.7600. Locale ID: 1033 I also wonder if maybe MediaBrowserWS isn’t crashing the Extensibility host directly, but rather MediaBrowserWS is sending something to the Extensibility Host which crashes it and then in turn crashes MediaBrowserWS ? Then it might not show up in a try/catch ? Just a thought. – Tex8503 1 day ago delete
The plot thickens… I dropped back to 0.7 Beta 2 and I'm not having any of the issues above. I can hit the web service test page and end the ‘endpoint’ error others have gotten, but the iphone remote program someone else wrote seems to work, but for whatever reason I can’t actually hit the application on the iphone, just the PC. This made me wonder if this was a firewall issue – but I can’t find the service in my services list to verify its running and can’t see in the list of programs the firewall system is keeping track of… – Tex8503 about 23 hours ago delete
having same issues as Tex8503 with latest version… service loads ok.. but crashes exthost within 15-20secs of MC/MB loading and service stops. not able to browse page from phone at all. using W7 x64 and android 2.1 – brainfryd about 20 hours ago
Should hopefully be fixed in latest release. I think it was from when I was trying to get all the commands working on x64 machines. Can you try the latest installer and let me know how you get on please? Cheers – evorgevol about 4 hours ago

same issues still for me also... tried the new installer this morning... still no joy... actually stops quicker than before in about 3-5 seconds after loading.

I've put a new version up, it's not the recommended release. Can you try it and see how you get on please? Failing this, then I'm absolutely stumped!! If it doesn't work, can you tell me more about what you have installed/how you got Windows 7? (A quick google on it closing soon after launch seems that upgrades from vista can suffer from this, or other apps having a lock on something..)

Tex8503 wrote Sep 11, 2010 at 4:19 PM

No dice on the new verison. Mine is a legit version of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 running on a custom built HTPC - basically an Nvidia ion board with atom processor. The log also doesn't show anything as being wrong - it says the service has started successfully - no errors.

It's gotta be something that was done in the leap from 0.7 to 0.8 as 0.7 beta 2 doesn't crash.

Do you have a change log of what was done between 0.7 and 0.8 ?

evorgevol wrote Sep 12, 2010 at 1:15 PM

I had done before, and reverted all I could think of to be the same (completely rolled back a few things) for one of the other attempts to fix it. The only other thing I changed was I added in a couple of other structs which might have done it. So I've updated these to hopefully be a little better.. (I'm clutching at straws, but there's not much that's actually changed!!)

Can you try 0.8 beta8 please? (though I accidentally named the installer 0.7 beta8)

Tex8503 wrote Sep 12, 2010 at 5:30 PM

Doh.. I had hope because this one seemed to run longer than most - but no dice. Still crashed. I was able to hit the test page before it died and it said it was running and the version was 0.8 b8 - but then it crashed the extensibility host and that was that. :/

here's a thought - if you renamed some of the structures/variables from 0.7 when you did 0.8 - maybe you named something that's reserved by the extensibility host because they co-exist in the same space? That might kill both... Just a thought.

evorgevol wrote Sep 13, 2010 at 6:49 PM

Ok, I've tried changing the names of the structs, though can't see why it'd be this as I have them in my own namespace, but here's hoping!!
What other plugins do you have installed may I ask?

Tex8503 wrote Sep 14, 2010 at 12:48 AM

Ok - so the new version didn't really fix anything - but I think I found the cause of the problem : The Music Plugin.
After uninstalling the music plugin the error stopped... so I'm curious why 0.7 would work with it on, but 0.8 dies with it on...

hey any news on this?
cause on my win 7 64bit 0.9 beta 1 is still crashing with mediabrowser 2.2.8

Tex8503 wrote Sep 30, 2010 at 1:24 AM

Do you have the music plugin installed ? If so, try uninstalling it. That's what worked for me.

thanks Tex8503 but tried uninstalling music plugin but no joy still crashing

Just wanted to chime in and say that I'm having the same problems as everyone else here.

Running Windows 7 Professional x64 (which is a clean retail version install) with MediaBrowserWS 0.9Beta1. Logfile indicates that the service started successfully (which it does - I can use the iPhone front end for about 10-20 seconds before the extensibility host crashes). Running MediaCenter as administrator doesn't help.

evorgevol wrote Oct 11, 2010 at 7:36 PM

This is a real shame, as I can't reproduce it to try any sort of debugging. Can the people who are experiencing this problem jot down what Media Center plugins they all have installed? Hopefully we can work this out..!!!

einstein_314 wrote Oct 11, 2010 at 11:04 PM

The only plugins I have installed are MediaBrowser (v2.2.9), MediaBrowserWS, and MediaControl. I had actually forgotten I had MediaControl installed. I'll remove it and see if the problem disappears.

evorgevol wrote Oct 12, 2010 at 10:28 AM

One of the other users has suggested that it could be MBRC that could be the issue.. could someone test uninstalling MBRC and seeing if the test page runs successfully please? (It might be worth making a backup of the web directory before uninstalling it, this should be found in %ProgramData%/MediaBrowser/MediaBrowserWS/Web )
The test page can be located at http://computername:port/MediaBrowserService/web/test

Hey evorgevol

I dont have the MB-RC app installed, and I cant get it working... However, I am attempting to run this via a remote desktop connection from work, and therefore MediaBrowser is not running... Maybe this is a stupid question, but does MB need to be running for the test page to work?
Otherwise, Im not seeing any success... Im also running the webpage from the local machine to where MB is installed - http://localhost:40600/MediaBrowserService/web/test which fails...

evorgevol wrote Oct 20, 2010 at 9:14 AM

MediaBrowser doesn't need to be running, but Media Center does. Are you running Media Center? Do you have any other plugins installed at all?

Same thing here - Media Center Extensibility Host crashes and then I get a crash message from MediaBrowserWS.
Windows 7 64bit, MB 2.2.9, no music plugin, default theme, nothing special..

ditto for me... Media Center Extensibility Host crashes, Windows 7 64bit, MB 2.2.9, no music plugin, default theme, nothing special..

Any news on this? I'm dying to try out the RC beta. I feel frustratingly close but so far away...
